Creating and sustaining a successful team starts and finishes with effective leadership

Our Rise Above program offers teamwork, leadership, resilience and well-being development.

Rise Above is a fresh, new education program being offered at our three Uniting Venues.

The Rise Above Program provides a positive educational program by delivering a wide range of dynamic activities based on teamwork, leadership, resilience and well-being for primary and secondary school students.

Through facilitator led activities, your group will be challenged in problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration in order to achieve goals and cultivate positive relationships. Each program is tailored to suit your groups’ needs and can include both on site and off site activities, all with a focus on the desired curriculum outcomes you wish to achieve.

Rise Above Frequently Asked Questions

What activities will we be doing at camp?

Each program with Rise Above is developed in conjunction with the school/group, and each contains a different combination of activities and program areas.  Many activities are also influenced by what season it is. Some of our favourite activities include: a venue wide amazing race, water based obstacle courses, team challenges, bush walking, day trips to the beach, ball games on the oval, craft, cooking, movie night, concerts, dancing, camp-fire + lots more.

What kind of leadership activities will we do?

Participants will be given the opportunity to self-lead key aspects of their program, working as a team to solve problems and tasks. You will have fun whilst developing leadership characteristics and skills for life.

Does Rise Above offer activities for participants with disabilities?

Rise Above endeavours to follow the Uniting Church’s mission of compassion and acceptance. This means we are inclusive of all groups and try to cater for everyone as much as possible. Those both with physical disabilities as well as learning disabilities or attention deficit disorders are very welcome. We can also provide special supervision for children who cannot swim or take part in other specific activities, as long as we are advised in advance of their special needs.

What is the staff to camper ratio?

Supervision is a critical factor in managing risk in the outdoors. A minimum of one Rise Above staff must be present for each activity.   The minimum supervision ratio will be: 1:15 per participants. Our staff undergo extensive training prior to camp and this matched with our genuine love working with children and teaching leads to a successful program!

Are group leaders, teachers or carers required to participate?

Every activity group containing minors (that is, participants under the age of 18), must have at least one adult supervisor as stated in the Rise Above Policy 2017.

How is the group split up into smaller groups?

Rise Above works with the group leader to effectively split participants into groups known as ‘squads’. Squads are made up of ideally 15, to ensure everyone gets the most out of their camp experience. Some activities such as bushwalks, kayaking and giant capture the flag games will merge squads together.

How long do activities go for?

Activities run for 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, activities can be shortened to 45 minutes and extended to 90 minutes, depending on your group schedule.

Is there any free time for the group?

Programs usually incorporate free time before and after meals. Where possible, Rise Above will include additional free time into a program at the request of the person booking/organising.

What happens if it is raining?

We take this on a case by case basis. If it is severe weather including lightening, hail, or heavy winds we must bring the group inside to run indoor activities as an alternative. However, if the rain is light and the group would still like to be outdoors we can often proceed with the activity.

Unfortunately, we do not provide refunds. We do have wet weather activities for your group.

Do you have a child safety policy?

Yes, Rise Above has a Child Safety Policy, and all of our leaders are trained in how to ensure the safety and well-being of all children while at camp. All staff employed also have a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC).
